Pine Barrens, Marshes and Wildlife

Reflection in a Pond

Seashore Acres is the name of a property in the forested area of the Wading River in Burlington County, New Jersey. It is the home to an long list of wildlife, from raptors, ducks, hummingbirds and mammals to reptiles.

One of the species of special concern is the terrapin turtle which has been overhunted and is especially vulnerable in modern times to injury as the females make their way back to their birthplace annually to lay eggs. Some of the travel requires crossing highways that did not exist when they were hatchlings.

These turtles can live to be 40 years old and their travel home has become more treacherous each year. The terrapin are exhausted after their journey and many succumb before or after laying eggs to overheating.
